Discover the infinite applications of this ancient art form for painting with pigmented wax. This intensive workshop offers a comprehensive approach for working both traditionally and experimentally with encaustic.

Become proficient with the key elements of the medium; paint application, manipulation and fusing methods.
Work with a variety of techniques including layering, scraffito, scraping, texturing, stencils, pouring, dipping, collage, incorporating mixed media and found objects to define your unique style.
Work on various substrates (paper, board, fabric, etc) as you become adept in working with this versatile medium.
Encaustic formulas, color mixing, supports and grounds, studio safety and the use of various tools will also be covered.

Personalized instruction, encaustic tools and equipment, room & board at the Harveyville Project are included in the workshop fees.

This workshop is an excellent opportunity to discover new techniques and applications with wax. Artists working in most any medium (drawing, painting, mixed media, fiber, clay, sculpture, etc) benefit from the exploratory, hands-on nature of this workshop. Beginning participants as well as those who have experience working in the medium, gain skills and techniques from the personalized instruction.

Once the class is fully enrolled, you will receive a confirmation packet via email (approximately one month before the start date of the workshop) which will include suggested materials list and travel directions to the Harveyville Project.

CANCELLATION & REFUND POLICY

If we must cancel the workshop due to under enrollment, you will be notified no later than two weeks before the workshop begins. In this case, the workshop fees will be returned to you in full.

If you must withdraw from a workshop and you give us a minimum of one month’s notice via email, we will retain a $25 cancellation fee and refund the remainder to you.

If you must withdraw from a workshop and you give us a minimum of three weeks notice via email AND we are ABLE to fill your spot, we will retain a $75 cancellation/administrative fee and refund the remainder to you.

If you must withdraw from a workshop and you give us a minimum of three weeks notice via email AND we are UNABLE to fill your spot, we will retain a $250 cancellation fee and refund the remainder to you.

Refunds are not available within two weeks of the workshop start date. A workshop credit of $250 may be available and will be determined individually. (Under special circumstances, a class credit may be offered at the instructor's discretion.)

What experience do I need? All levels are welcome! Beginners learn all the basics of encaustic painting. Those more experienced with encaustic, focus on refining their techniques and work on projects that will that open up the creative flow.

What supplies are included? All basic supplies are included: wax paint and medium; brushes, scraping, scratching and scribing tools; stencil materials, fabric scraps, thread/string, paper, hot palettes, heat guns, torch; general studio supplies and mixed media supplies. Please note, two wood panels will be supplied for practicing techniques; you may wish to bring along additional panels or substrates to work on in class (see below for additional info).

When should I arrive/depart? Plan to arrive on Thursday evening between 6 - 8pm to meet one another, eat, orientation and rest before the workshop begins on Friday at 10am. Dinner is provided on Thursday evening.

The workshop ends at 4pm on Sunday. For those wishing to stay on Sunday night, the fee is an additional $75 which includes Sunday dinner and Monday breakfast.

What do I bring? A sense of adventure and willingness to experiment!
A sketch book or notebook (for taking notes) and additional substrates are strongly suggested. Images or samples of your current work.

A supply list will be provided. You may wish to bring along collage elements (b&w photo copies of photos, text, natural fabrics, etc.), 2 & 3-D items, string/thread/yarn (no synthetics), sewing/knitting/crochet needles, or projects in progress. Any tools or materials you want to experiment with during the workshop.

What are recommended substrates/supports?
Encaustic paint is best used on a rigid surface that is absorbent and heat resistant.
Wood panels are great as a substrate. A lightweight panel can be made from 1/4” luan plywood braced with a wooden frame on the back. Heavier and sturdier panels are made from 3/4” plywood.

Unsupported, stretched canvas is not recommended - unless used as wall hangings - due to the flexible nature of canvas. Encaustic on canvas can crack depending on the thickness of the paint and is effected by changes of temperature and humidity.

2-Dimentional: (up to 12" x 12" is a good size for class)

Weather? This workshop takes place in November and weather temperatures can be unpredictable; layers are suggested.

Where is Harveyville? About 2 hours southwest of Kansas City and/or the Kansas City International Airport; an hour south from Lawrence; 35 minutes from Topeka.

Is there transportation to/from HVP and the Kansas City International Airport?
If a minimum of 4 students are flying in, a shuttle may be arranged for a fee. Please contact Cheryl to coordinate flight times and for additional info.

Can I bring my pet with me? The Harveyville Project does not permit pets.

ABOUT THE HARVEYVILLE PROJECT

Housed in two mid-century school buildings on nine acres on the edge of a tiny rural town, the Harveyville Project offers a quiet, secluded, distraction-free environment to jump start your creative work.

ROOMS Most of the shared guest rooms are large (average 700-900sf) former classrooms with charming schoolroom details (chalkboards, maps) and tons of natural light. All of the beds have new, quality mattresses, cotton linens, and down blankets or comforters (cotton blankets instead on request).

The high school has wireless internet access.

BATHROOMS AND SHOWERS are shared (the original school facilities). Towels and washcloths are provided.

MEALS
BREAKFAST is continental; includes coffee & tea, waffles, fruit, cold cereal, yogurt, pastries, toast, etc.
LUNCH is served buffet style.
DINNER is served buffet or family style. As always, you’re free to enjoy the group or fix a plate and skip out, if you’d prefer a little solitude.

SPECIAL DIETS We can accommodate vegetarian and vegan diets–just let us know in advance.
If you’re bringing your own special snacks or beverages, you may keep them in one of the group fridges.
